    The diverse functions of Krüppel‐like factors 4 and 5 in epithelial biology and pathobiology.Beth B. McConnell, Amr M. Ghaleb, Mandayam O. Nandan & Vincent W. Yang - 2007 - Bioessays 29 (6):549-557.
The Krüppel‐like factors (KLFs) comprise a family of evolutionarily conserved zinc finger transcription factors that regulate numerous biological processes including proliferation, differentiation, development and apoptosis. KLF4 and KLF5 are two closely related members of this family and are both highly expressed in epithelial tissues. In the intestinal epithelium, KLF4 is expressed in terminally differentiated epithelial cells at the villus borders of the mucosa and inhibits cell growth, while KLF5 is expressed in proliferating epithelial cells at the base of the intestinal (...)

Studies in Nietzsche and the Classical Tradition.James C. O'Flaherty, Timothy F. Sellner & Robert Meredith Helm (eds.) - 1976 - Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press.
These fifteen essays on Nietzsche's indebtedness to the Classical Tradition were composed by scholars in the fields of philosophy, theology, German and Classics. The essays roughly cover the following epochs: the age of the Fathers of the Western Church, medieval scholasticism, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, Weimar Classicism, Romanticism and the several other intellectual trends and movements in the nineteenth century. Collection includes three essays comparing Nietzsche's perceptions of Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates with those (respectively) of Augustine, Aquinas, and Hamann. Three (...)

    Bad Advice, Reflexive Finesse, and Pragmatic Imagination.Vincent M. Colapietro∗ - 2023 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 58 (4):327-340.
Abstract:Rorty in private exchanges and public discourse occasionally gave me remarkably bad advice (e.g., in teaching pragmatism, especially to undergrads, it is better to focus on James and Dewey to the exclusion of Peirce). He however was far better than this. As a philosopher preoccupied with meta-philosophy and intimately linked to this with issues of justification, he displayed reflexive finesse unsurpassed by any of his contemporaries. As someone who identified with James and Dewey even more than Marx, Freud, Foucault, and (...)

Studies in Nietzsche and the Judaeo-Christian tradition.James C. O'Flaherty, Timothy F. Sellner & Robert Meredith Helm (eds.) - 1985 - Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press.
This collection of essays is a sequel to the editors' 1976 volume Studies in Nietzsche and the Classical Tradition. Philosophers, theologians, and literary historians discuss important aspects of Nietzsche's attack on Judaism and Christianity. The book contains studies of his view of biblical figures, Luther and Pascal as well as comparisons of his thought with that of Spinoza, Lessing, Heine, and Kierkegaard. Nietzsche's critique of the Old Testament, the Jewish religion of the diaspora, and historical Christianity are also investigated. Of (...)

Utilitarianism in the Age of Enlightenment: The Moral and Political Thought of William Paley.Niall O'Flaherty - 2018 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
This is the first book-length study of one of the most influential traditions in eighteenth-century Anglophone moral and political thought, 'theological utilitarianism'. Niall O'Flaherty charts its development from its formulation by Anglican disciples of Locke in the 1730s to its culmination in William Paley's work. Few works of moral and political thought had such a profound impact on political discourse as Paley's Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy. His arguments were at the forefront of debates about the constitution, the (...)

The rhetorical strategy of William Paley’s Natural theology : Part 1, William Paley’s Natural theology in context.Niall O’Flaherty - 2010 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 41 (1):19-25.
This article reconstructs the historical and philosophical contexts of William Paley’s Natural theology. In the wake of the French Revolution, widely believed to be the embodiment of an atheistic political credo, the refutation of the transmutational biological theories of Buffon and Erasmus Darwin was naturally high on Paley’s agenda. But he was also responding to challenges arising from his own moral philosophy, principally the psychological quandary of how men were to be kept in mind of the Creator. It is argued (...)

    Community and Constraint.Vincent M. Tafolla - 2015 - Philosophy and Rhetoric 48 (2):162-185.
Most Plato scholarship characterizes Socrates's dialectic as cooperative, reciprocal, and open ended. This orthodoxy echoes Socrates's characterizations of it, but the dialectic's dramatizations rarely confirm it. Commentators recognizing this seek to protect the dialectic's image by maligning Socrates's interlocutors. Francisco Gonzalez's description of the Protagoras's “central crisis” exemplifies this approach. When a dispute over how to conduct the discussion threatens its dissolution, Gonzalez blames Protagoras, claiming that relativism forecloses conversation and community. I argue that Gonzalez elides alternative forms of community (...)

The political economy of information exchange politics and property rights in the development and use of interorganizational information systems.Vincent M. F. Homburg - 2000 - Knowledge, Technology & Policy 13 (3):49-66.
Interorganizational information systems are information systems that cross organizational boundaries. Information managers and system developers often assume that the more integrated these information systems are, the more successful the system will be. Such an assumption is indeed intuitively appealing, and, from a technological standpoint, readily understandable. In practice, development and use of integrated information systems that cross organizational boundaries often result in confusing power struggles, politicking, and sometimes manifest sabotage. Based on economic and political organization theory, this article concludes that (...)

    Is cetacean social learning unique?Vincent M. Janik - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (2):337-338.
Studies on captive dolphins have shown that they are capable of social learning. However, ethnographic data are less conclusive and many examples given for social learning can be explained in other ways. Before we can claim that cetacean culture is unique we need more rigorous studies which are fortunately not as difficult as Rendell and Whitehead seem to think.

The Kairos of Philosophy.Vincent M. Colapietro, Donald Phillip Verene & Melissa Shew - 2013 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 27 (1):47-66.
This essay seeks a philosophical understanding of the nature of kairos that, in turn, discloses the nature of philosophizing. This essay claims that the kairos of philosophy is dialogue, and that dialogue is kairological in two ways: (1) Dialogue is not just a phenomenon that occurs in chronological time but, rather, imposes its own time in order to see how life (or being) itself is disclosed to us; (2) dialogue is kairological because it denotes a moment in which we are (...)

    Toward a More Adequate Understanding of Adaequatio.Vincent M. Colapietro - 2021 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 35 (2):147-164.
The author argues for an alternative understanding of adequation to the traditional one as an illuminating gloss on part of what truth might mean. He does so in reference to a cultural context in which the very idea of truth has been in some circles rejected. Moreover, he explores this topic in conjunction with several feelings typically accompanying our responses to mendacity and simply to inadequate linguistic formulations or definitions.
